Horror Tip: Hide

I just saw this little horror game gem called "Hide". It is a very simple game with very simple graphics. Basically the game is all about finding five signs scattered across a map while avoiding being found. I think it is a great example in how not showing something properly makes the imagination go wild. The extremely sparse (yet workable) graphics and the atmospheric soundscape forces you to immerse your self and imagine your worse fear.

The game only takes a few minutes to play, so I suggest you all give it a go. And do not forget those headphones!

  1. I've seen this game plastered around all over the internet in the past few days. Didn't get to try it out myself yet (kinda hard to get the proper ambience in my very very noisy home), but I'm definitely intrigued since everyone keeps saying the same thing you do.

Also my indie-supporting half is really glad that whoever made it got so much (unexpected, I assume) attention, it's really cool when such good stuff gets widely recognized.

Wow this is and excellent little horror game. The thing that actually had the most the effect on me was the breathing you did. For me it really felt real. I really felt like I was running for my life and my lungs were trying to escape my body out of exhaustion. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Tomas, why are you removing my links ? I'm only only trying to show you other free games you might like

If you posted a comment and it didn't show, then it probably wasn't Thomas who removed it (assuming there was nothing inappropriate in the post), but the blogger's overly aggressive spam filter... It happens - try again.

  6. There are 2 great games Thomas might like.. first one is a indie game called "Limbo", it has bee recently released on PC.. The other one is called Witch and its freeware.. I'm still playing Limbo however Witch is a must.. its a first person 3d black in white, escape-the-house horror game, with no jump scenes, just pure horror, like amnesia. You can find it by watching the YouTube video called "top 10 free horror games" or freeware horror games.. anyway, witch took 1st place.. -MH

  7. Tomas, please don't make jump-scenes, just more of the good old slow burning paranoiac horror :) Try playing Limbo while listening to "Nocturnal Depression - Solitude and Despair".. I'm just trying to inspire you to make an even better game ! :))

  8. @Anonymous (MH) ["top 10 free horror games"]:
    Wow, that's an amazing compilation.
I only played Ex Mortis, and it was pretty good for a flash game, and had some interesting ideas... like the ending.

Here's the link to the YouTube video:
    clicksy

I'm also gonna repost the link in the comment section of the latest blog entry, as the old ones are far less active once they go old.

  9. Pretty strong and good atmosphere. I love games like this. Made with heart.

  10. Good atmosphere, but too hard. Trying to get all 5 signs is a pain in the ass, and by trying hundret times with the sluggish controls wich are otherwise helpful to create that feel of exhaustion, it gets more annoying than scary!

The difficulty is spoiling the otherwise very good game

  11. Now that I think of it, you may are supposed to fail after three signs, its impossible to get all. But the end screen implies that it is possible and the goal, tempting players to try again and again ending up hating the game. That twist should have been better transported

  12. I was pleased and impressed with Hide. It does a very good job of evoking a genuine sense of horror, which is a real accomplishment considering its minimalistic approach. Especially considering that most mainstream "horror" games can't even accomplish that. Hide's actually quite similar to the feeling of playing Penumbra or Amnesia, so there you go.

I wrote about Hide on my own blog, reviewing its content and analyzing how the different components establish the survival-horror aspects. Check it out here:

  14. "I think it is a great example in how not showing something properly makes the imagination go wild." This thought has stuck with me for the past few weeks. Hide did a very good job in using the iceberg technique: to reveal less is to express more. I might post a blog entry about this stuff later on, although probably at an amateur, more subjective level.

I recently started my (swedish) blog but feel free to visit it. I mostly discuss game design and my take on it as an aspiring game developer.

  15. Oh my God, I got to 4/5 locations until one of the flying things spotted me. I looked forwards and then this god damn demonic piece of shit started coming towards me. I was frozen with fear for a couple of seconds xD. Shit man, that was scary, thanks for sharing that :)

  16. I really like the aesthetic, and there's plenty of atmosphere, unfortunately the dodgy AI sort of spoils it for me.

  17. how do you run, or sprint in this game instead of walking or hiding?
