Some thoughts

Note:
The following was all part of the Portal 2 ARG that we participated in and is not really important any longer. Keeping it for historical reasons.

  5. Oooh. Photoshop's auto tone does magic to the image. Red is that you?:) Asking for help on April Fools was a bad idea, you know

  6. Great news! Hope it bring us another awesome survival horror.

  7. I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope this will help, otherwise I recommend looking into potato printing - it's a great way to pass time on a rainy afternoon... or when you're trapped in a base without hope.

But look on the bright side, I'm sure with the success of Amnesia they'll be able to afford a bigger dungeon to lock up more employees with you sooner or later.

Hang in there and best of luck to you!

  8. Steam just updated the game with 300+mb of stuff. Assuming we're supposed to find this statue in the game?

  9. So... are you just using old webspace, or are you remaking Unbirth =D? (Though it seems kinda like Amnesia was the Unbirth remake already.)

  10. Any chance this potato sighting has something to do with a potato-fied hero in another game?

  16. I'm taking a course here in Sweden called "Datorspel i Lärande I". It's REALLY interesting! Have you guys read the book "What Video Games Have To Teach Us About Learning and Literacy"? If not, it's a really good read! By James Paul Gee. I hope this course will help me to become a better Game Designer ( if i ever get accepted to a school >_< ).

    Anyway, sorry about that....

Thomas, while you're in there: i realized that to export animations to *.dae requires a PROPERLY WORKING COLLADA plugin, and these are, alas, hard to find, especially for 3ds Max. Besides that, are there any special requirements, naming conventions and such? OpenCollada sort-of works, but it exports the mesh one way and the bones 90deg off. Frustrating...

If u don't have ink in that basement... Write with ur blood...

  20. HEY FRICTIONAL GAMES!! i have an idea to make your new games even more scarier! you should make a voice engine into the games so the player MUST have a microphone! and then when the player talks (screams in fear) the character in the actual game screames! so whatever the player says, he will say it in the game! this forces the player to be completely quite when an enemie is near, otherwise the enemie will hear the player, this will make an even better immersion!!! this is just an idea i come up with :) i think its a great idea and you should try it out! i am really looking forward all of your new games first person survival horror games, and it would be awesome with this voice engine into it to! i would be really glad to play a game like that :)

  21. PO-TA-TOES, boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew?!?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Microphone-idea-dude; That's actually a terrible idea. Sure, it's kinda cool but they will lose potential costumers if they force people to get a microphone/headset to play the game.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What is the post deleted? ;(

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm so confused.

    ReplyDelete
  25. then they give the player a choice, to play with it or without it

and most people who play these games do have headset, and most people do have a microphone too, but yeah youre right but its not a terrible idea

    ReplyDelete
  26. The microphone idea would be too easy to exploit, even if they included microphones in the deal. That is to say, all you'd have to do is put the microphone in a location where it couldn't pick up the sound of one's voice.

And then, of course, there is the issue of background noise. If someone moves a chair behind you, or if there's a conversation going on in the background, then the monsters will have an unfair advantage.

It's nice in theory, but it wouldn't work.

  27. awh i didnt think of that! sorry

  28. I thought this blog post was a philosophical treatise on internet censorship. 8o

    ;)

Really love this blog. It has provided me with many hours of thoughtful contemplation. I really appreciate the in-depth and off-beat treatment of game creation by the Frictional team.

I've been reading for a while, but I've recently decided that it's all too much to miss so have started reading through the entire blog from the start. I'm now up to April 2010, but I've cherry-picked throughout the whole archive.

While the blog posts are both informative and thought provoking, a real gem of this blog is the comments by readers. These comments are often as thoughtful as the posts that inspire them and although I'm skipping the comments for now, and look forward to reading them in my spare moments when I've finished reading through the posts.

Keep making the games that are good rather than those that are merely fun, Frictional. Many people appreciate them now and many more will in the future.

  29. and that you could hide it away that would destroy the whole immersion thing its to get an even better immersion to the game and that is up to the player if he wants to hav the mic on or off but yeah youre right about the background noise it wouldnt work

  30. I just got a 60 mb or so update on Steam. Now, the potatoes at the main menu are gone. Does this mean that any secrets hidden throughout the game are also gone? I just gave myself a reason to go insane again and now I'm not so sure...
