Though I ask myself if there are even more effective ways to tell stories through gameplay, I hope to find my own answer and to talk again about this interesting topic!Omotehttp://omotestudio.tumblr.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193968969153274146.post-84318112945335802622014-03-11T10:58:46.060+01:002014-03-11T10:58:46.060+01:00I just fear that things will bleed more into actio...I just fear that things will bleed more into action than survival horror if you're too regularly in contact with other people, even if they are being mutilated. Tom Redwood and Daniel worked because they were A. Insane and unseen B. Past-tense. For us, the importance is that you are PLAYING the story. And in order for that to be the case you sometimes have to make dialog snippets smaller. To say that we have gameplay instead story is wrong, because the what you are playing is just as much narrative as the dialog.Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02945983378935089787noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193968969153274146.post-43321106250519656462014-03-10T19:58:18.380+01:002014-03-10T19:58:18.380+01:00Your example help me out to better understand what...Your example help me out to better understand what the article meant. And I partially agree.

My question is: why to change the voice over to 20 seconds if its optimum is 1 minute? I can change the part of the game involved instead.

Of course is a matter of balance, but it seems that usually the choice tends always in favor of the gameplay. My real concern here, is if the gameplay could be changed in a way that it works well supporting the 1 minute voice over. In other words a gameplay that suits the story and not the opposite.

I hope to have been clear! I don't want to provoke, but just to exchange opinions :-) Omotehttp://omotestudio.tumblr.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193968969153274146.post-28860124967314815672014-03-08T19:24:55.491+01:002014-03-08T19:24:55.491+01:00Just to be clear: This is not the pipeline we work...Just to be clear: This is not the pipeline we work with at all. Story and gameplay are intertwined to the point that they are indistinguishable at times.

That does not stop clashes from happening though, in both ways. For instance one of the bigger issues concerns agency. We cannot assume that the player does something in a certain sequence and therefore must construct a scene that allows for many different outcomes. This can put strains on what characters can do and say, which is the sort of constraints that Mikael talk about.

A simple example is a voice over that is played when going from A->B. As we cannot know the speed the player will travel at, we have to find some good middle ground of how long the dialog can be. Say that optimum would be 1 minute to get all the character stuff through and get a nice flow. But in practice, we can only allow 20 seconds. Then in turn this can impact some other dialog, as not enough info could be conveyed, etc.
Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02945983378935089787noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193968969153274146.post-70116061740751403532014-03-08T14:30:06.571+01:002014-03-08T14:30:06.571+01:00I'm not sure I agree. Like any legitimate creative work, it's important to realize that theres more than one way to do it. i think limiting games to one possible work pipelineĀ is unnecessary and accomplishes little towards any game's potential. A deep story can be developed at any time the writers see fit and work best withdomporterahttp://domportera.tumblr.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193968969153274146.post-67012411723996248452014-03-08T13:56:34.909+01:002014-03-08T13:56:34.909+01:00I think that this kind of pipeline (first gameplay...I think that this kind of pipeline (first gameplay, after story) will never make the games discolose their true potential.
I like your games, they really works. Though I think story and gameplay should be developed together and not in parallel. Only in this way you can provide a deep story and expand the set of things you can say.Omotehttp://omotestudio.tumblr.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193968969153274146.post-3419493291022659642014-03-07T20:30:09.793+01:002014-03-07T20:30:09.793+01:00Way to suck up to the boss, lol. jkWay to suck up to the boss, lol. jkSkyhawk02noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193968969153274146.post-76986150598729307302014-03-07T14:59:48.427+01:002014-03-07T14:59:48.427+01:00very interesting writeup of your job at frictional...very interesting writeup of your job at frictional. well written too, which i suppose should be suspected :PAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193968969153274146.post-91161544510701034472014-03-07T14:52:46.715+01:002014-03-07T14:52:46.715+01:00As a guy currently working on my own game project ...As a guy currently working on my own game project and writing the narrative for it, this was pretty informative!
